Renault puts up nearly 100 cars on sale, here are the highlights

An auction named Renault Icons and dedicated to the French automaker’s vast portfolio in the automotive industry will take place this Sunday, offering nearly a hundred of rare production cars, concepts and prototypes to private buyers.

Starting with the oldest vintage models, these include a 1898 Renault Type A, a Type D that came only three years later and a carriage-shaped Type G that followed two years after Type D.

If that’s too old for you, the listing mentions plenty of classics from the late 20th century. For example, there’s a Renault 5 made in 1983 and a mid-engined Maxi 5 Turbo race car from the same period.

Some of the most recent additions to the collection include a 2016 Renault Alaskan truck, a 2007 Renault Clio III Gran Tour and a 2007 Renault Kangoo.

There are also some tuned examples in the mix, like a 40-year-old Renault 25 V6 co-designed with Heuliez. The Alpine badge is likewise represented, with the highlights being a 36-year-old GTA V6 Turbo and an elusive A610 Evolution Le Mans made 32 years ago.

If you are in the business long enough, things are bound to get weird at a certain point – and Renault is no exception. Its collection of automotive curiosities includes a Renault 21 Frankencar sporting a dozen of doors and two cabins, as well as a second-generation Clio subcompact morphed into a crazy six-wheel truck simply because some students needed to train their metalworking skills.

The automaker emphasizes that most if not all vehicles on sale are not unique. With the Renault Museum currently being restructured and moved to another building, its vast car storage had to be dusted off and revised. A decision was then made to sell any redundant exhibits, only leaving those that are truly unique. You can check out the Renault Icons website for a full list.
