Renault Espace morphs into SUV, shows itself in official teasers

Renault has shared the images previewing the next-gen Espace model. While the old generation was minivan-shaped, the new one looks like an SUV based on the Austral model introduced a year ago. The premiere will most likely take place in March.

The profile view in particular suggests that the car is a crossover: note the characteristic hood creases, DRL outlines and inclined a-pillars. The rear end is completely different from the Austral, though, with almost upright c-pillars, more elaborate fenders and a longer rear overhang. The latter means the new Espace will offer a seven-seat version with more legroom for the rear bench occupants.

At 4.72 meters (184.4 inches) long, the Espace will be 21 cm (8.2 in) longer than the Austral but 14 cm (5.5 in) shorter than the preceding generation. Renault promises us more interior space in the new design, though, thanks to some added width.

Inside, there will likely be two 12-inch displays on the dash, plus a 9.3-inch heads-up display.

The engine range may end up carried over from the Austral as is. In this case, the new Espace will run on hybrid power, driving the front wheels with 130–200 hp. Rear-axle steering should be available, too.
