Rolls-Royce dedicates a wacky custom Ghost to video games

The British luxury automaker has just rolled out a one-off Ghost Black Badge saloon build for a client who is fond of 8-bit arcades and retro video games. The car is full of neat secrets, references and Easter eggs.

All pricing is private, as usual. Joshua McCandless, who participated in the project, said his team had spent a whole month exploring the retro video game aesthetic and studied real-life arcade machines along with consoles, gaming magazines and ads of the 1980s to decide how to better approach the conversion.

The Ghost ended up finished in a unique combination of colors that you may have seen on an arcade machine some four decades ago. The sides are adorned with the depiction of Cheeky Alien, the mascot of the project composed of 3x3mm “pixels”. The same character can be found on the seat headrests and the folding tables.

The seats are marked “Player 1” and “Player 2” in a special embroidery meant to resemble the flickering and the chromatic aberrations of old CRT screens. There is an alien planet depicted between the rear seats along with c couple of UFOs. The dashboard sports pixelated LED lighting elements shaped like a starship traversing space. Last but not least, the company’s signature Starry Sky now looks like a cosmic battlecruiser armada of at least 80 ships.

And if that’s still not enough to awaken your nostalgia, the side sills will do their best to remind you of retro consoles with inscriptions like “Insert Coin”, “Press Start”, “Loading”, and “Level Up”. Too bad there’s only one such car in existence.
