Tuned Mazda RX-7 from Tokyo Drift nearly hits £1M

33 years ago, VeilSide designed a cool-looking body kit for the rotary-engined Mazda RX-7 that proceeded to star in Fast & Furious: Tokyo Drift. One of the (reportedly) two examples made has now crossed the auction block in the UK, selling for a cool £911,000. That’s around $1.22 million in U.S. money.

According to the listing, both cars from the filming set were equipped with a full Fortune body kit from VeilSide. It replaced the entire bodywork of the car except for the roof, something that’s more or less normal now but was still an extreme thing to do a third of a century ago.

The stock two-rotor engine continued its duty under the hood, churning out 280 PS (276 hp / 206 kW). Japanese tuning company RE-Amemiya overhauled it shortly before the sale, so the numbers should be good. They also went through the mechanical parts, replacing the clutch, the coilovers in the suspension, the exhaust system and the brakes. And remember than nitrous oxide system from the movie? Many filming sets use blatantly fake props in place of such systems, but the one on this RX-7 turned out to be genuine and fully functional. That’s another pleasant surprise for the owner should they ever feel like taking the car through its courses.

Modifications inside were limited to VeilSide bucket seats and assorted trim details from carbon fiber, aluminum and chrome.
