BYD bets on hybrids in Europe

China’s largest electric car manufacturer had believed that BEVs were the way to go in the EU countries, but has now changed its mind.

According to an official message from the company, it discovered that many Europeans were actually hesitant to drive a fully electric car. Since BYD has been investing heavily in the Old World with two factories under construction and long-term growth plans, it decided to switch its focus from all-electric vehicles to plug-in hybrids. It should help that the company already has plenty of PHEVs in its domestic portfolio.

Around 37,000 BYD vehicles found owners in the EU in Q1 2025.
