Hyundai slashes prices on the hydrogen-powered Nexo in the USA

The Hyundai Nexo is one out of only three hydrogen fuel cell cars on the planet to enjoy a full-fledged production run. The other two are Toyota Mirai and Honda Clarity, and the latter will be discontinued next year.

Today, Hyundai has discounted the Nexo on its primary target market, the United States. The savings amount to $7,500 – $20,000 depending on the spec. The entry-level car costs $42,385 before incentives. If you subtract the $8,000 tax incentive and the $4,500 eco benefit, the end price drops to mere $29,885.

Having said that, the Nexo is the least popular Hyundai model in the States. The company moved only 208 examples in 2020 and 267 a year before, even though its original estimations showed a demand of several thousand annual units. The most obvious culprit to blame is the lack of hydrogen infrastructure throughout the country.

The Hyundai Nexo has been designed as a fuel cell car from the ground up. It has a traction battery in the trunk and three 6.35-kg hydrogen gas canisters mounted at the rear end under the floor. The driving range amounts to 595 km (370 miles), and the life expectancy of the powertrain is officially estimated at around 240,000 kilometers (150,000 miles).
