Skoda rolls out a concept dripping with ‘60s charms

Skoda has completed yet another concept car from its “history reimagined” series: the revival of the 1000 MBX Coupe from the early 1960s.

Back at the time, the original car went into production and sold approximately 2,500 units. Reinventing it for the modern audience, designers Antti Savio and David Stingl decided to go with a “sedan-like SUV” aesthetic and add sliding doors.

According to them, the result comes across as friendly-looking and not aggressive in the slightest – and it is a deliberate decision. The 1000 BMX Coupe wasn’t a sports car, either – it was an elegant and practical vehicle for active drivers, and just that. If you look at the headlights, the shoulder line and the c-pillar punctuated with a glass insert, you’ll realize how closely it is actually inspired by the original from six decades ago. The lack of a rear window “adds practicality” in an age when a camera is enough, Savio and Stingl claim.

Inside, the rounded dashboard is made of glass and relies on projectors to display the gauges and the multimedia content. The center console is absent, and the floor is perfectly level. The rear seat bases can be folded up for some extra luggage space – the renderings show a bike fitting there.

As usual, there are no technical parameters to discuss. The designers say the concept was envisioned with a fully electric powertrain, but you’ve probably guessed it by now. Just one detail we were able to find concerns the suspension. Skoda argues that such a car must have flexibly adjustable air suspension that would automatically lower itself for easy trunk access or when the driver steps on the accelerator.
