Subaru has officially unveiled the next generation of its Outback model – not a wagon like in the ‘90s when its history began, but an SUV. It combines mostly old tech with new looks, but we’ll leave it up to you to decide whether it’s an improvement or a downgrade.
Let’s focus on the technical side of things instead. The 2025 Outback SUV comes with two powertrains to choose from. An entry-level 2.5-liter engine has no forced induction and delivers a humble 180 PS (178 hp / 132 kW). A 2.4-liter turbo mill available at a premium livens things up somewhat with 260 PS (256 hp / 191 kW) heading for all four wheels as usual. The CVT with its eight imitated gears and the AWD system remain unchanged from the previous generation.
Despite having 220 mm (8.6 inches) of ground clearance, the new Outback has relatively tame approach and departure angles of 18 and 21.4 degrees, respectively. Those who would like a more terrain-friendly SUV will want an optional package called Wilderness. Among other things, it raises the clearance to 241 mm (9.4 inches) and the approach/departure angles to 20 and 22.5 degrees, respectively.
