Meet Subaru Trailseeker, a Solterra relative for Japan

Subaru’s first-ever all-electric crossover for the global market – the Solterra – debuted in 2021 and received two facelifts later. Last spring, the company announced a larger and more upmarket model called the Trailseeker, designed specifically for Japan. It has now reached production in Gunma Prefecture.

The new SUV is 4,845 mm long, 1,860 mm wide and 1,675 mm tall with 2,850 mm between the axles. As such, it is 155 mm (roughly 6 inches) longer and 25 mm (1 inch) taller than the Solterra it is based upon, while the other dimensions stay the same. The minimum trunk size is 595 liters (21 cubic feet).

Interior images remain to be revealed, but we expect something similar to the U.S.-spec Solterra cabin seen at the end of the gallery above. As for the powertrains, the Trailseeker is expected to ship with a single front-mounted electric motor rated at 227 PS (224 hp / 167 kW) or two such motors installed one per axle. A 74.7-kWh battery pack will allow the FWD version to cover more than 700 kilometers (435 miles) per charge. The AWD version will likely have less range, but it will be able to sprint 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.5 seconds, the company claims.

Prices for the Solterra EV in Japan begin from ¥5.17 million, which amounts to almost exactly $33,000 USD. The larger and better equipped Trailseeker is liable for a premium.
