Japanese tuner resurrects the Toyota AE86 with timeless looks and tech

TOM’s Racing has unveiled an extensive restoration program aimed at the Toyota AE86 sports coupe from the mid-1980s. Every car gets stripped down to the bare chassis, thoroughly cleaned and repaired, and re-welded in extra spots to improve its overall rigidity.

The stock four-cylinder engine gets to stay in its bay, but not without major modifications. Among other things, it gets bored out to 1626cc of displacement, letting it output 194 PS (191 hp / 143 kW) and 191 Nm (141 lb-ft) of torque at the crank. For comparison, the original was only good for 160 PS (158 hp / 118 kW) and 162 Nm (119 lb-ft) at most.

We were unable to procure any detailed interior pictures, but TOM’s Racing promises us a premium textile makeover looking true to the late ‘80s aesthetic. Modern options and equipment are available upon request.

Price-wise, the restored AE86 may look a bit intimidating – but not when you take the sheer scope of work into account. Orders in Japan start from 13.2 million JPY, or roughly 83,000 USD. Add another 3.3 million JPY (30,000 USD) if you’d like the company to find a suitable donor vehicle for you.
