Toyota’s street-legal hypercar faces uncertain fate after fiery crash

Up until now, Toyota had been developing a road-worthy hypercar to rival the track-only GR010, but its production prospects now hang in the air because of an accident.

According to Racer, a test vehicle caught fire in a road accident, ending with serious damage. Restoring it and proceeding with the tests would require significant additional expenses and could ultimately be considered not viable by Toyota.

It is important to note that, even if a road-legal GR010 never comes to the market, the Japanese marque will still be able to participate in endurance races. The rule that prohibited automakers from participation unless they homologated their hypercars through issuing a limited series of street-legal cars has recently been canceled.

In 2018, Toyota unveiled the GR Super Sport Concept that its Gazoo Racing subdivision intended to turn into a performance flagship. A camouflaged test car based on it has recently cropped up on the 4 Hours of Le Mans track. You can also review our gallery and watch the video for a closer look at the model, the future of which now hangs by a thread if Racer is to be believed.

If the GR010 ever does reach the market, it will likely pack over 1,000 horsepower (750 kilowatts) and cost more than $1,000,000.
