Hydrogen-based Toyota Mirai sets a new range record

Toyota has put its Mirai fuel cell sedan to a test, making it run over 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) along the roads of France without refueling once.

The record-breaking test run took place on May 26 and saw four drivers replacing each other throughout the race. A second-gen Mirai left the hydrogen gas station in Orly, France at 6 a.m. and has proceeded to cover 1,003 kilometers (623 miles) in total, dethroning the Hyundai Nexo by 116 km (72 miles).

Interestingly enough, the manufacturer-rated driving range for the sedan is just 700 kilometers, or 435 miles.

The car consumed 550 grams of condensed gas per 100 km on average. All four drivers made their best effort to conserve fuel by braking and accelerating very smoothly.

The technology behind the Mirai hydrogen powertrain is eco-friendly, which means it produces zero harmful emissions when used.
