Video: Golf R Mk.8 shows some drift action

The next-gen Golf R has plenty of interesting features coming, and the AWD Drift Mode is just one of them. Watch the video and keep in mind that only highly qualified drivers are permitted to perform these stunts on dedicated raceways.

Activating the mode is as simple as pressing the “R” button on the steering wheel and then choosing “Drift” on the infotainment display. Once activated, the car will redirect the torque to the rear wheels and make the necessary stability control adjustments.

The new Golf R comes powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine turbocharged to 315 PS (311 hp / 232 kW) and 420 Nm (310 lb-ft) of torque. It zaps from standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.7 seconds and maxes out at 250 km/h (155 miles per hour). Transmission can be six-speed manual or seven-speed semi-auto.

Sales in North America will begin in 2021.
