A video recently went viral on The Drive with a Porsche 911 (996) that its owner decided to swap to a Honda K24 turbo four-pot. Many pointed out the builder’s lack of taste, but he seems very satisfied with the result.

Ben Simpson, the owner of Bayside Fabrication in Florida, admits that there was no reason for swapping the German sport car’s 3.4-liter flat-six engine for a smaller Japanese inline-four. It was perfectly fine. He just saw one of his friends swap a Smart car to the same engine and decided to do some experimentation of his own.

To maximize the potential of the K24, Sipson CNC-machined its cylinder block, put a Pulsar 6262G twin-scroll turbo on top, sourced a BMW 335i intercooler, and fabricated a custom air intake along with numerous other components. He used an adaptor kit from Kennedy Engineering Products, including a flywheel and a clutch, to make the new engine work with the stock Porsche transmission. Lastly, he added a limited-slip differential to better distribute that torque.

Speaking of which: Sipson ran a dyno test with his 911 before the conversion, and it showed 260 PS (256 hp / 191 kW). When he did the same again after the fact, it showed more than 507 PS (500 hp / 373 kW). That’s about twice the original power.
