Alfa Romeo 2000 Spider Veloce sells for $175k

The passionate British Alfa Romeo tuners from Alfaholics have produced a highly desirable car by taking a 1972 Alfa Romeo Spider and giving it a Busso V6 alongside improved suspension and left-hand steering wheel (the donor was RHD). It found a new owner at Bring-a-Trailer on Tuesday, bringing the seller $175,000.

As you may know, the vintage cabriolet featured a four-cylinder engine that didn’t produce more than 132 PS (130 hp / 97 kW). Alfaholics swapped out that engine putting a 24-valve Busso V6 in its place. As a result, the output to the rear wheels went up to 220 PS (217 hp / 162 kW) and 271 Nm (200 lb-ft) of torque. The transmission is five-speed manual, as it should be.

The designers decided against modifying the chassis, the bodywork and the interior of this particular Spider Veloce, making do with targeted repairs and restorations. It partially explains why the result didn’t cost more – replacing the entire bodywork and cabin can be pricey. And while 220 horses may not seem like much, consider that the whole car tips the scales at barely more than a metric ton (2,200 pounds). It’s guaranteed to be plenty of fun to drive at this weight point.
