The Top Gear show, which began 46 long years ago, has been taken off the BBC program. It may or may not return later – the channel is not promising anything.
In the official comment, BBC says it regrets to pull the show with so many fans from its lineup, but believes it was the right thing to do. A more detailed announcement will be coming later.
New York Times believes that the original incident that led to Top Gear shutting down happened in late 2022. Andrew Flintoff, 44, one of the show hosts, got into a severe incident driving his car. The filming of the 34th season of Top Gear was put on halt and has never been resumed. An investigation was launched into the cause of the incident, but the results have not been published yet. According to rumors, BBC paid Flintoff over $10,000,000 in damages, but he still failed to make a complete recovery.
The first episode of Top Gear aired in the UK in 1977 as a program promoting safe driving. It was rebooted 21 years ago and peaked in popularity with Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond for the hosts. In 2015, the trio left BBC following a series of scandals involving Clarkson and launched their own show on Amazon, called The Grand Tour.
