General Motors has officially applied for registration as a power unit manufacturer for Formula 1 racecars. The corporation plans to make its F1 debut in 2028, Motorsport.com reports.
According to the publication, the new status claimed by GM will help Cadillac with its ambition to enter the world’s most famous racing series through its partner, Andretti. The company has already submitted an application to the FIA and it has been pre-approved, however, the final decision has not been reached yet. The issue is that all 10 existing Formula 1 teams have voted against introducing an 11th team into the championship.
It is believed that the race organizers will be more disposed to welcome Cadillac’s team if the company becomes an official power unit supplier for the series. Until all the bureaucratic details can be ironed out, though, Andretti plans to fall back on using third-party engines.
At the moment, Cadillac has no Formula racecar in its portfolio, but it does have an endurance racer which you can see in the gallery and the video here.
