Tuners have long been struggling to hack into the ECU of the new mid-engined Corvette, but Rob Dahm found a better workaround that let him tune the sports car to Bugatti levels of thrust and torque.
Rather than trying to work with the stock ECU, he opted for moving the entire engine management routine to an external control module called the VCU. This enabled him to retrofit the V8 with dual turbochargers and crank up the pressure until the dyno stand got hit with 1,369 PS (1,350 hp / 1,007 kW). The build immediately proved itself viable on the drag strip as it finished a quarter-mile run in 8.97 seconds.
In addition to controlling boost pressure, injection and other internal functions, the custom VCU performs a variety of other useful tasks. For example, it minimizes gear shifting times and implements an automatic launch control mode that eliminates driver error during drag strip runs.
