Ford has unleashed an intriguing new Maverick pickup on the streets, encasing it in some light camouflage but overhauling the drivetrain from the ground up.
It is obvious that the exterior will not change much at all. The most interesting bit by far is a junction box mounted on the rear left door. If you take a closer look at the text on it, you will realize that the compact pickup has a plug-in hybrid powertrain based on a 2.1-liter engine. Even more interestingly, it is an all-wheel-drive model.
The Maverick hybrid currently on sale is FWD only and maxes out at just 194 PS (191 hp / 143 kW). As a result, most buyers opt for an AWD non-hybrid spec with a superior 254 PS (250 hp / 187 kW) at the crank.
Rumor has it the new AWD PHEV version utilizes a larger traction battery sized 14.4 kWh. The technically related Ford Escape SUV gets around 60 km (37 miles) of all-electric range out of the same battery pack.
