Laguna Seca sued over being too noisy

A group of residents of Monterey in California, USA has sued the management of the adjacent Laguna Seca Raceway complaining about the excessive noise interfering with their lives, CarBuzz reports adding some interesting context.

The so-called Highway 68 Coalition (named after the highway nearest to Monterey) claims that the track activity has boomed over the course of the past two years compared to the preceding years. Track days and racing events had allegedly been held more frequently, resulting in bad traffic congestions and air pollution.

Not just that, but the opponents of the racetrack argued in their claim that water quality had dropped in the region following this rise in popularity, and that the expansion of the camping site now actively used by race spectators and participants caused a further disruption to the locals’ daily lives.

The applicants’ lawyers argue that the track is now being used for various events almost on a daily basis, partly because it can now be rented by private individuals. The residents are demanding that the district authorities ban any races exceeding the noise pollution standards adopted in the year 1985.

For its own part, CarBuzz points out that Laguna Seca is most likely older than most of the claimants, having been commissioned in the distant 1957. The publication also notes that all the rental businesses that cropped up in the recent years and the paid track days have become a crucial income source for the district, so cutting them short might not be as good of an idea as some may think.
