Maserati MC12 designer voices his opinion on the new MC20

Frank Stevenson, former Maserati car designer, has found points to praise and criticize in the company’s latest supercar.

He liked the black finish of the roof, pillars and side skirts, pointing out that it helped highlight the outlines of the body. He was also impressed with the rich detailing of the interior, including seat upholstery graphics.

He found the overall appearance of the performance car a bit too “soft” for what it can do, and the brake light design too uninspired compared to the likes of the 3200GT coupe with its “boomerangs”. Another major point of criticism was the interior, which according to Frank contained too many digital elements and nearly not enough analog ones, which can be more appealing to customers if done right. Overall, he gave the MC20 7.5 points out of 10.

Through his 30-year long career, Frank Stevenson has worked for Alfa Romeo, BMW, Ferrari, FIAT, Ford, McLaren and MINI. He still names the Maserati MC12, this spiritual predecessor of the new MC20, among the most interesting projects he has ever worked on.

The Italian automaker has 12 new models planned for release in the next five years, and the U.S.-based designer promises to share his opinion on the upcoming Quattroporte model. Back in his time, Stevenson designed the fifth generation of the car.
