Meet the Munro MK_1, a hardcore electric off-roader packing up to 380 PS

Munro Vehicles, a Scotland-based automaker founded in 2019, has unveiled the Mk_1, a boxy SUV it brags about as ‘one of the world’s most powerful all-electric’ off-roaders.

The versatile car comes with two powertrains to choose between, rated at 300 and 381 PS (296 and 276 hp; 220 and 280 kW, respectively). Customers can also choose between a smaller 61-kWh traction battery and a larger 82-kWh one. The maximum range amounts to 306 km (190 miles).

The company claims the Mk_1 can traverse open terrain for 16 hours straight before it needs to be charged again. After eight years of use or 100,000 miles (161,000 km), the battery will have retained around 80 percent of its original capacity.

With an instant torque of 700 Nm (516 lb-ft), the off-roader can carry up to 1,000 kilograms (2,200 pounds) on board and tow up to 3,500 kg (7,700 lbs). The top spec is also a relatively fast sprinter with a 4.9-second time from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph). The top speed is capped at 130 km/h (80 mph), though.

Thanks to a body-on-frame construction, a trio of differentials including an interaxle diff lock and a two-speed transfer case, the Mk_1 indeed looks like a capable overlander first and foremost. Its ground clearance makes an impressive 480 mm (18.75 in), and it can wade water up to 800 mm (31.25 in) deep. The approach and departure angles are also said to be optimized for peak off-road performance.

The first shipments are scheduled to begin in 2023 with the prices starting at £49,995.
