The Mercedes-AMG GT 73 reveals itself to be a hybrid

The AMG GT 73 had repeatedly been spotted out in the open before, but it wasn’t until today that we learned that it is a plug-in hybrid.

The latest spy shots made in the snowy expanses of Sweden reveal a car that looks similar to its less sophisticated siblings – the GT 63 and the GT 63 S – but conceals a charger port in the rear bumper.

The ‘73’ suffix frankly reminds us about the 7.3-liter SL 73 AMG V12 engine that Pagani later re-used in its supercars. However, the AMG GT 73 actually comes powered by a 4.0-liter V8 and a single electric motor. In its standard spec, the gasoline engine delivers up to 630 hp (470 kW) depending on the car it is installed into, but the GT 73 will receive it boosted to around 800 hp (600 kW).

This should enable it to sprint 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in around 2.5 seconds, which is way faster than its archrival – the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid – can do (3.2 s).

The Mercedes-AMG GT 73 should be revealed later in the year and go on sale in early 2021.
