Nissan will abandon sedans in Japan, but keep the Skyline

A number of unofficial sources have reported recently that Nissan would soon discontinue all sedans in Japan. The automaker has now issued an official clarification on the matter.

Out of the three Nissan-badged saloons available in Japan – Cima, Fuga, and Skyline – the former two will indeed leave the lineup sooner or later, although there are no specific timeframes. The Skyline is a different story. According to Nissan Executive VP Asako Hoshino, the car is an icon firmly associated with the marque; as such, it will be continued for a while longer.

The mid-sized Sylphy left the domestic market last fall without leaving a successor, although it remains on sale in a number of other countries. As for the other Nissan sedans, customers in Japan only bought around 5,800 of those in 2020, or 1% of the total sales of the marque – no wonder they are now being discontinued.

Internationally, Nissan sold around 950,000 four-door vehicles last year, so it definitely won’t be discontinuing global sedan sales anytime soon.

The latest Nissan Skyline belongs to the 13th generation that debuted eight years ago. The most recent facelift was in mid-2019 (see video).
