Tata delivers Punch, its cheapest CUV ever

Indian car manufacturer Tata Motors has unveiled a baby SUV named Punch, which will soon go on sale priced under 5 Rs Lakh and land in the same niche as the Maruti Suzuki Ignis, Nissan Magnite, and Renault Kwid.

The company says the newcomer represents the continuation of the ideas found in the HBX Concept revealed last year. Judging by the only new pic of the final production version, it has two-tier headlights, an unpainted plastic body kit, a contrast roof, and darker-hued pillars.

Higher trim levels will likely offer digital dash, HVAC, keyless engine start, and a 7-inch infotainment system with online connectivity and voice command support.

Drivetrain details haven’t been made public yet. Another Tata compact – a hatchback named Altroz – uses a 1.2-liter three-pot available in non-turbo and turbo versions. The former produces 85 PS (84 hp / 63 kW) and the latter 110 PS (108 hp / 81 kW). Transmission choices boil down to five-speed manual and automatic. Rumor has it that the Punch may get CVT instead of auto, though. All-wheel drive is not really on anyone’s list of expectations.
