VW rolls out its strongest, fastest Golf GTI ever

The Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 celebrates half a century since the introduction of the world’s first “sported-up” Golf hatchback. The fastest and most powerful FWD Golf model in history is slated for production in Wolfsburg, Germany in late 2025, but the customer deliveries won’t start until early next year.

In the meantime, the anniversary-themed Golf GTI set a lap record on the Nürburgring and is now gearing up for a 24-hour endurance race on the same track. Compared to its stock counterpart, the GTI enjoys the same scope of upgrades as the last year’s Clubsport spec. Among other things, it commands a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine boosted to 325 PS (321 hp / 239 kW) and 420 Nm (310 lb-ft).

In the current Golf lineup, it ranks second in power and torque output, yielding only to the Golf R AWD with its 333 PS (328 hp / 245 kW). With a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint time of 5.5 seconds, the Edition 50 is also one-tenth of a second faster than the Clubsport. Top speed remains capped at the same 270 km/h (167 mph), though.

Other notable changes include a revised suspension setup. The ride height is 15 mm (0.6”) lower by default and 20 mm (0.8”) lower if you opt for the GTI Performance package. Aside from stiffer springs, that package includes Warmenau 19-inch forged wheels, Bridgestone Potenza Race semi-slick tires and an Akrapovič titanium exhaust system. Combined, these components help shave off nearly 30 kilos (65 lbs) of weight compared to stock.

On the outside, the Golf GTI Edition 50 is easily recognizable thanks to silver accents and badges on the spoiler and side mirrors. The interior follows the same theme with accents on the scuff plates, the steering wheel and the bucket seats. The seats themselves are quite sophisticated with a trim that combines leather, suede and tartan fabric. Customers can choose from five available exterior colors, including two model-exclusive ones called Dark Moss Green and Tornado Red. The Tornado Red has been making appearances on all kinds of Volkswagen sports cars over the past four decades, but this is the first time you can get it on a modern Golf GTI.
