Volkswagen reveals the second-gen Phaeton it never made

The executive saloon called Volkswagen Phaeton debuted exactly 20 years ago and had stayed in production for 14 years until it could no longer compete. Despite this, the automaker apparently had plans for another generation, which has now been revealed.

The concept car sports distinct Touareg and Skoda Superb styling cues. It has an interior draped in wood and natural leather, dominated by a digital dashboard and an infotainment panel. Two more displays are built into the front seat backs, and the center console houses yet another screen.

The second generation of the Phaeton – which will now never reach production, the company says – came based on the same MLB Evo platform as the Porsche Cayenne, Lamborghini Urus and Bentley Bentayga. Unfortunately, the company revealed nothing about its powertrain during today’s 20th anniversary celebration.
