Audi will attend the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on January 4–6, 2023, with its own commercial solution for an in-car VR entertainment system. It will debut alongside a game you will be able to try out.
Co-designed between Audi and Holoride, an early version of this tech actually debuted at the CES show four years ago. As soon as the passenger puts on VR goggles, the system adapts the content shown to the movements of the real car in real time. If it’s a spaceship that the player controls, for example, it accelerates, brakes and turns in sync with the car. The companies claim that highly precise synchronization is used to eliminate the risk of sea sickness.
The tech has already been adapted for the Audi A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, Q5, Q7, Q8, Q8 e-tron, e-tron, e-tron Sportback and e-tron GT coming out in 2023 with third-generation infotainment hardware on board (the so-called MIB 3). Those lucky enough to sit in the back row of an e-tron SUV or e-tron Sportback will also be able to play Pixel Ripped 1995: On The Road, a nostalgia-inducing continuation of a classic 2D video game scheduled for its CES debut.
Holoride offered its VR headset as a €699 option for Audi cars in Germany last fall. The company now plans to expand its presence to all of Europe in 2023, followed by a launch in Canada, China, Japan and the United States. The press release stresses that all the involved technology is already ripe for mass-market implementation.
