RWD, Maserati-swapped BMW 3-Series Touring goes for $28k

A recent Cars & Bids auction saw an 18-year-old BMW 328xi wagon change hands for a cool $28,050. The reason? It packed a Maserati F136 V8 co-designed with Ferrari.

The listing neglected to mention the reason for the swap, so it could be just one of those “because I can” projects. The mill is 4.7 liters large and outputs 439 PS (433 hp / 323 kW) along with 490 Nm (361 lb-ft) of torque without any forced induction. The seller claims you can use the included ECUMaster module to tune it to an even higher output. A six-speed manual transmission sourced from Nissan carries the momentum to the rear wheels, as AWD is no longer functional.

On the outside, you can immediately tell it’s not a stock 328xi model thanks to a cat-free performance exhaust system, upgraded front brakes and a carbon body kit. The latter includes fender flares, side skirts, a splitter and a diffuser, as well as a hood with a Prancing Horse logo on it.

Inside, Recaro Sportster seats and a suede-trimmed center armrest from the M Performance parts list round off the look. The listing mentions multiple defects both visual and technical, ranging from stained trim to warning lights being constantly on for brakes, ABS, and AWD.

According to the owner, they had paid north of $30,000 to get this Bimmer wagon where it is now, but no one was willing to buy it for that much. In the end, the auction reserve had to be lowered in order to allow the $28,050 top bid to pass. After all, we all know how that saying about buying someone else’s project car goes, don’t we?
