Meet the BMW i3, the next Neue Klasse EV

BMW continues to build up its Neue Klasse electric vehicle lineup with a sedan called the i3 scheduled for March 18 premiere. It seems to be closely related to the current iX3 SUV despite some visual differences.

The only teaser image available so far depicts the car with a rather uniquely shaped radiator grille. It evokes associations with the iVision Dee Concept from three years ago. The similarities with the iX3 are also there, but it’s probably too early to draw any conclusions.

To provide the Neue Klasse lineup with adequate electric power, BMW has devised an all-new dual-motor powertrain for it. It is currently found in the BMW iX3 50 xDrive, making 469 PS (463 hp / 345 kW) and 635 Nm (468 lb-ft) of torque combined. We suppose the sedan could get the same powertrain along with another option or two. In a recent interview, BMW M executive let it slip that a quad-motor, 1,000+ horsepower motor setup was in development, so we expect quite a bit of choice in the Neue Klasse further down the line.

Rumor has it that the new BMW i3 will reach production in Europe in midsummer, with the first sales allegedly planned for July. The regular BMW 3-Series won’t be going anywhere for the time being, but it may end up with a major design overhaul as the company is trying to solidify its portfolio under the uniform Neue Klasse look.
