Chevy Camaro Bandit wearing Pontiac Trans Am camo goes on sale

Mecum Auctions will be looking for a buyer for this ultra-rare Trans Am Depot Special Bandit Edition in mid-May. Number 11 from a production batch of 77, this 840-hp muscle machine used to be driven by actor Burt Reynolds, so it could fetch a solid price.

Just to be clear for the sake of our international readers, this isn’t a genuine Pontiac Trans Am. A tuning company called Trans Am Depot built this car a decade ago based on the fifth-generation Chevrolet Camaro chassis. It had its entire body redesigned as well, the bumper replaced, and some new aero parts added like the front splitter, the headlight shrouds and the radiator grille.

The rear end was also stylized after the Trans Am with new brake lights, exhaust finishers, ducktail spoiler and gold accents. Quite unavoidably, the hood ended up with the iconic “Screaming Chicken” decal.

A peek inside reveals freshly retrimmed seats with headrests, door cards adorned with custom graphics, and a revamped front panel with Burt Reynolds’ autograph on it. Although the images don’t show it, the roof features a Targa section that you can remove to turn the Bandit into a convertible of sorts.

As for the engine bay, it is occupied by a 7.4-liter supercharged V8 pushing 852 PS (840 hp / 627 kW) to the rear wheels. Assorted brake and suspension upgrades along with new wheels should make this Camaro feel like a modern ride in all senses, much in contrast to the antiquated Trans Am.

The auction will take place on Saturday, May 16th.
