Legendary racer’s Callaway C12 goes on sale

One out of 19 existing Callaway C12 supercars is being sold at an auction in the USA right now with the bidding at $72,000 – a steal considering its sheer rarity value. The car bears an autograph of Dale Earnhardt Jr., twice-champion of NASCAR and Daytona 500.

Callaway built the C12 based on the Chevrolet Corvette (see video). This example was number 18 in a batch of 19. It received a 6.2-liter V8 rated at 482 PS (475 hp / 355 kW), as well as a six-manual transmission sending the power to the rear axle. Powered like this, the car could reach 309 km/h (192 mph) when new.

The tuning company also outfitted it with variable-assist hydraulic power steering and ventilated rotor brakes all around, concealed behind 295/30 R19 wheels. Inside, it installed a two-zone climate control system and a Kenwood audio system hooked up to Bose speakers. It also re-trimmed the cabin with genuine leather instead of cheap plastic.

The door handles, windows and doors are still original, but the entire body is made from carbon-fiber and Kevlar panels. The taillights originate from an Opel Tigra, and there are numerous other parts borrowed from different cars.

The C12 on sale has just 40,000 km (25,000 miles) on the odometer to show for being a quarter of a century old. A year and a half ago, it underwent some maintenance that saw its shock absorbers replaced and generator cleaned. The seller claims its current condition is pristine.
