The latest generation of the European C3 starts off as a pure EV named eC3 and priced from a low €23,300.
The model has traded its old PF1 platform for CMP, morphing from a well-rounded hatchback into a boxy-looking, high-riding crossover. The EV version has 163 mm (6.4 inches) of ground clearance. The driver sits 100 mm (3.9 inches) higher than in the average hatchback, too, Citroen says.
The car is 4.01 meters (156.6 in) long and has 2.54 meters (99.2 in) of wheelbase – barely larger than the old generation. Despite that, the interior has gained quite a big of legroom thanks to an optimized layout and the trunk area has expanded to 310 liters (nearly 11 cubic feet). Among other things, the new C3 now takes advantage of the manufacturer’s Advanced Comfort suspension featuring hydraulic dampers.
The head unit diagonal size is 10.5 inches, but you will have to pay for the top trim level to get any display there. All other trims give you a smartphone holder with a connection port for the in-car stereo, and that’s it.
In its tamest form, the eC3 makes do with a 113-PS (111-hp / 83-kW) motor on the front axle. It needs 11 seconds to reach 100 km/h (62 mph) and can cover 320 km (199 miles) on a charge thanks to a 42-kWh lithium-ferro-phosphate battery. Charging from 20 to 80 percent will take 26 minutes as long as the input power is enough; a standard power socket will replenish the same amount in four hours.
In a few years, Citroen plans to follow up with an even more affordable €19,900 eC3 variant packing a smaller battery rated for 200 km (124 miles) of range.
Those in the mood for a petrol car will have to wait for a 1.2-liter turbo three-cylinder version coming up in the near future. The specific date is unknown; all we know is that it will make 100 PS (99 hp / 74 kW) and be available with manual or DCT for the transmission.
The new eC3 will become available to pre-order in early 2024.
