Hennessey Performance is busy developing a whole new engine for the already-frightening Challenger SRT Demon 170. The farewell edition of the iconic muscle car pumps out 1,039 PS (1,025 hp / 764 kW) to the wheels, but the Texan tuning company wants it to slam the asphalt with 1,724 PS (1,700 hp / 1,268 kW).
According to company founder John Hennessey, who spoke about the project in his latest YouTube video, this upgrade will necessitate a full engine swap. He didn’t specify where the custom engine would come from, but pointed out that the company would need two massive Precision Turbos to drive it.
According to preliminary calculations, the car will be able to cover a quarter of a mile (402 meters) in 7.9 seconds, beating the standard Demon 170 dragster by a full second.
Customers will not be losing their OEM engine and gearbox, either. Hennessey will package up both and stash them away. Whenever someone feels like reverting the swap, they will only need to ask (and pay for the job, of course).
Hennessey Special Operations will handle the design and the production. Only 12 units will be built, including one personally for John Hennessey – you will find it in the video here.
The prices aren’t discussed at this point, but knowing Hennessey, we wouldn’t expect any less than $200,000 for the materials and the job, donor vehicle not included. In fact, it could be much more than that.
