Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta Competizione to be revived under a new name

GTO Engineering, a company based in Twiford, UK, announced a project last fall that would see the iconic 60-year-old Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta Competizione revived as a replica named Moderna. It has now followed up with a few 3D images of the car and a new name for it.

As it turns out, the replica will be called GTO Engineering Squalo. Squalo is Italian for “shark”, and while it may look like the original 250, it is essentially an all-new vehicle with state-of-the-art materials, components and tech used throughout. A stainless-steel frame rests on an aluminum subframe, and while the doors and the hood are also made of aluminum, the rest of the body is mainly carbon fiber plastic.

An in-house-designed four-liter naturally aspirated V12 drives the wheels through a manual transmission. Modern electric and electronic components are on the feature list alongside 18-inch wheels, low-profile tires, independent suspension and no more than a metric ton (2,200 lbs) of curb weight.

All technical specifications will be revealed next month, after which the car will proceed to its road tests. Orders will open soon, but shipments will not begin until 2023 or so.

On a side note, GTO Engineering has been restoring, selling and modifying Ferrari cars in the UK for three decades now. Its 250 SWB Revival Coupe from last year likewise drew inspiration from the Ferrari 250, although it was constructed from scratch based on OEM documents. It came out in a strictly limited batch and now commands extremely high prices. Watch the video if you would like a close look at that one.
