Watch a 2006 Ford GT accelerate to 500 km/h (310 mph)

Johnny Bohmer got behind the steering wheel of a highly tuned 2006 Ford GT on his own Proving Grounds in Florida and set an unofficial speed record among street-legal cars.

He bought the Ford new and spent all these years perfecting a custom build, aiming to create a no-compromise straight-line racer still allowed on the public roads.

The video lacks a full description of the modifications, but they are plentiful. You only need to notice the roll cage, the massive exhaust system tips and the brake chute to get a rough idea. The cabin, on the contrary, is rather tame with the air conditioner, the stereo and the front passenger seat still preserved.

Only select tests were filmed, including a run to assess the efficiency of new ECU software. It proved so efficient that the pro racer decided to try and push the car to its very limits. He ended up recording a top speed of 310.8 miles per hour, or 500 km/h. Had a Guinness Book representative been present, they would probably recognize the GT as the fastest street-legal car in the world.
