The Genesis G70 sedan is selling so much worse than its main competitors that it may drop out of production next year, warns Automotive News quoting the sales statistics from the USA.
According to it, one of the saloon’s primary rivals – the BMW 3-Series – has found around 37,000 buyers since the beginning of the year. Another important contender in the segment, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, has sold 14,000 units so far. Genesis has only managed to move slightly more than 5,000 G70 examples over the same period.
The automaker insists that it has “no current plans” to discontinue the G70, but the numbers aren’t working in the company’s favor. Pricing is another major issue. While both BMW and Mercedes use highly standardized unibody platforms for their sedans, Genesis maintains unique architectures even just for the G70 and the GV70. This approach ramps up the production costs and the retail prices.
On the whole, Genesis remains in the green on the U.S. automobile market, but largely thanks to the solid performance of its GV70 and GV80 models. While the SUVs remain strong, sedan sales continue their decline in North America.
In an earlier announcement, Automotive News reported that the all-electric Genesis G80 was on its way out of the United States due to poor demand.
