Indian automaker Mahindra has previewed the Thar Roxx, a five-door modification of its Thar SUV, in a short video. The premiere is set for August 15, India’s Independence Day.
The second generation of the Mahindra Thar has been in production since 2020. The video, which shows some bikers pursuing a semi in a cheesy parody of action movies, proves that the Thar Roxx does every bit as much to copy the appearance of the Jeep Wrangler as its three-door cousin does. It has a visibly stretched body, LED lights all around, a redesigned radiator grille and five-spoke alloy wheels with a two-tone finish.
There are still no interior photos. The local media speculate that the SUV may go on sale with a 10.25-inch infotainment display and some ADAS. A sunroof should be available as an option.
In its entry-level form, the model will likely utilize a 1.5-liter diesel engine mated to a manual transmission and the rear axle. The other two engine options – 2.0-liter petrol and 2.2-liter diesel – are expected to carry over from the three-door version without major modifications. Both should be available with manual or automatic for the transmission, as well as AWD with a self-locking rear differential.
The prices are expected to lie within the range of 1.3–2.5 million Indian Rupees. The three-door version currently starts from 1.135 million. Once out, the Thar Roxx will have to compete against the likes of Suzuki Jimny and Force Gurkha.
