Autozam AZ-1 Kei car puts on its best Ferrari F40 impression

Liberty Walk, no stranger to outlandish body kits and over-the-top styling jobs, has unveiled its next major project. What used to be an Autozam AZ-1, a JDM Kei coupe made by Mazda in the early 1990s, started to look like a bit like a Ferrari F40.

The body kit is known as the LB40 AZ-1 and can already be pre-ordered from U.S. $22,600. The original Autozam car it is supposed to be applied to looks not unlike a compact supercar itself thanks to fancy gull-wing doors and a transaxle engine. When it came out in 1992-1994, it was considered one of the brightest and most memorable Kei cars in Japan.

Liberty Walk takes it a bit further with a custom front bumper featuring an elongated front splitter and canards, a new frunk lid, flared fenders, side sill extensions, and different door panels. A glance at the rear end reveals new bumper, diffuser and fixed rear wing.

There also seems to be a new exhaust system with three tailpipes grouped in the middle like a genuine F40. It is missing from the parts list on the tuner’s official website, though. LW also warns that the double taillights and headlights aren’t included, either. Installation and finishing are paid options, too. If you want the custom forged wheels shown here (16” front, 17” rear), it’s a costly $14,300 option.

It looks like the Autozam AZ-1 preserved its stock powertrain in this project. As any other Japanese Kei vehicle, it had a tiny 657cc engine installed that drove the rear wheels with 64 PS (63 hp / 47 kW) through a five-speed manual transmission.
