V6-powered Mazda MX-5 hits the road in EU at long last

Rocketeer Cars, an auto shop specializing in swapping Mazda MX-5 “Miata” roadster to six-cylinder engines, has sprouted a branch office in Germany. At the same time, the company revealed that it managed to obtain a TÜV certificate for its proposed tuning program, basically meaning you’ll be able to tour the entirety of Europe in a car like this.

The company accepts NA, NB and NC Miata generations for the swap, leaving out only the latest ND generation. The stock 2.0-liter four-pot, which never delivers more than 172 PS (170 hp / 125 kW) depending on the version, gets ditched in favor of a 3.0-liter V6. Interestingly enough, the choice falls on the Jaguar AJ30 mill powering the UK-made Jaguar X-Type and S-Type.

Even in its stock form, the engine is good for a solid 240 PS (237 hp / 177 kW). Those looking for extra efficiency may prefer a custom-built variant that rev up to 9,000 RPM and delivers 350 PS (345 hp / 257 kW). That’s plenty of thrust for a roadster weighing barely above a metric ton (2,200 lbs).

Another cool detail is that the actual installation is handled by SPS Motorsport, a German car specialist that’s been building track-ready Mazda cars since 2012. Among other things, you may have heard that their MX-5 made the fastest Nürburgring lap on record.
