Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series scores a record bid, still fails to sell

A 10-year-old Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series with only 240 km (150 miles) under its belt has gone on sale in the United States and attracted a top bid of $975,000, Autoevolution reports. Despite setting an absolute record for SLS AMG examples traded at public auctions, its owner decided to keep it.

The comments under the listing claim that the seller had hoped to get between $1.1 and $1.5 million out of the deal. They are now apparently in a private negotiation with the highest bidder, trying to work out a compromise.

It is worth pointing out that the car appears to be in pristine condition despite having three previous owners in the title. It is also highly exclusive, belonging to a batch of just 132 units made for the U.S. market. The original buyer acquired it for $285,800.

The Black Series improves upon the standard SLS coupe with styling cues taken from the SLS GT3 racecar. It also features an engine boost from 580 to 650 PS (from 571 to 631 hp; from 426 to 478 kW, respectively). Back when it premiered a decade ago, Mercedes called its 6.2-liter V8 the world’s most powerful naturally aspirated engine with eight cylinders.

Aside from the boost, the Black Series featured a lighter body, a reworked seven-speed DCT with tweaked gear ratios, a different suspension system and improved aerodynamics all around.
