Will the Mazda CX-5 become a rear-wheel drive, coupe-shaped SUV?

Rumors had emerged before that the new Mazda 6 and CX-5 would switch to a new RWD chassis, but now, Japanese media claim that the latter model will soon be turning into a coupe-SUV.

Mazda will allegedly call the model CX-50, just like the more compact CX-30 before it. The exterior and cabin will be redesigned to look more like the CX-30, and the c-pillars may end up sharply slanted to justify the “coupe” part.

The model will reportedly share its engine range with the next-gen Mazda 6, specifically a gasoline engine with no more than three liters of displacement and a 3.3-liter turbo diesel. Four-cylinders will also be present, both unassisted and electrified. Finally, the source claims that both the new 6 and the CX-50 will make use of the same rear-wheel drive chassis, but part-time AWD will still be a paid option.

A few months ago, Mazda let it slip that it was temporarily halting the development of new models to venture into the premium market segment instead. If true, then we likely won’t be seeing the rumored CX-50 until at least 2022.

In other news, the current-gen CX-5 SUV received a slight facelift in Europe just over a month ago – peek into our gallery and watch the video for a brief summary of the changes.
