Owners of Nissan’s first-generation electric cars in Great Britain will soon find that some of their remote features no longer work, Carscoops reports.
All Leaf and a-NV200 models produced before 2016 are said to be affected. Starting on April 1, 2024, they will no longer support remote activation of AC or heater from a smartphone app. Furthermore, checking up on charging progress will also be impossible via phone.
All features will remain directly accessible from the car’s infotainment system. However, with the smartphone app no longer functional, the owners will have to pay a visit to their EVs in person whenever they want to toggle the climate control or the charging.
As for the reason, Nissan says 2G networks will go out of service in the UK in the near future. When they do, the 2G antennae found in the older EVs will become obsolete. This is honestly a bit puzzling, because the planned retirement of the 2G infrastructure won't happen until the end of the decade. There's hardly a reason for Nissan to discontinue the in-car services as soon as April 1, 2024.
