Pagani says a resolute ‘no’ to electrification until batteries get on a diet

Supercar maker Pagani has announced putting all EV development activities it had been engaging in since 2018 on hold until new, lighter power cells arrive to the market.

According to an internal study the Italian company conducted, building a supercar it wanted would necessitate a battery pack weighing as much as 600 kilograms (1,322 pounds). This is more than half of the weight of the Huayra R model featured in the gallery here.

As well, the manufacturer said driving EVs was less emotional than regular ICE cars. While producing an insanely powerful and fast EV is not a problem per se, generating involvement with it, an emotional bond, is another matter entirely.

This is more or less what CEO Horatio Pagani said in his latest interview with Autocar.co.uk earlier this week. He added that his dream was an electric supercar tipping the scales at below 1,300 kilograms (2,866 pounds), a target currently unattainable. This means that the company will instead focus on developing V12-powered models again, bolstered by the recent slackening of the EV legislation in Europe that allowed gas-powered supercars to continue to exist until 2035.
