Renault gets another full-size SUV ready for launch

The Renault Filante will celebrate its debut on Tuesday, January 13, but you can already check out the teaser pics.

Based on these, the Filante has a gently sloping roof with a modest spoiler and a shoulder line that rises towards the rear end. These features make it look like a coupe-SUV. At the same time, the company makes it clear that it is a full-size machine that’s larger than the Rafale, Espace and Austral. The specific measurements are unknown, but while it is already official that the production will take place in South Korea, the target markets remain to be announced.

On an interesting side note, Renault’s factory in Korea has been making an SUV called the Grand Koleos – essentially a rebadged Geely Monjaro. As such, it’s not entirely out of question that the Filante ends up being a badge-engineered Chinese crossover. We hope to clear it up on Tuesday when it debuts.

A few weeks ago, Renault unveiled a prototype EV named the Filante Record (see video). It managed to set a record by running more than 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) on a simple mass-produced 87-kWh battery pack. While impressive in its own way, that prototype seems otherwise completely unrelated to the SUV discussed above, despite sharing the name with it.
