Student-made EV sets a new range record: 2,574 km, or 1,599 miles

We reported the other day that a team of students from Switzerland came up with an electric vehicle that set a world record accelerating 0-100 km/h (see video). This time around, another student group – from the Munich University of Technology – set another world record with their 15.5-kWh EV battery that took all of six days to discharge.

The announcement highlights that solar power was not used in the experiment. The students built a single-seat car prototype named muc022 to be as aerodynamic and lightweight as possible. They ended up with a vehicle weighing 170 kilograms (375 pounds) and powered by a 400W electric motor (that’s four-tenth of a kilowatt, or 0.54 horsepower).

During a test drive, the EV managed to cover 2,574 kilometers (1,599.27 miles) before running out of charge. The record has already been submitted to the Guinness Book and will soon be officially listed there.
