Tesla hits the top of the European EV sales rating with the Model Y

The Tesla Model Y has been the most demanded car in Europe in September, JATO Dynamics reports pointing out that this is the first time the company leads the sales in the region. Growing EV market and rising production volumes at Gigafactory Berlin could be the main explanations.

In September alone, buyers registered 29,367 Model Y SUVs in Europe, a 227% increase over the same month the year before. The second place in the rating went to the compact Peugeot 208 (~19,600 units), and the third place was taken by the affordable Dacia Sandero hatchback (~17,700 units).

In the list of only electric cars, the second place went to the Tesla Model 3 with ~12,200 sold units. Its sales took a 50% plunge from the last year, apparently due to production difficulties in China and the fact that the Model Y had risen in popularity compared to the sedan. Rounding off the electric top-3 is the Volkswagen ID.3 with only 6,500 units or so.

All in all, EVs currently account for 15.6% of the market in Europe with over 160,000 units sold in the first month of the fall. Germany, UK and France led the sales confidently with a higher-than-60-percent share in the total volume sold.

In the meantime, Tesla has produced 880,000 Model Y cars since the beginning of the year, barely under the 906,000 units produced in the whole 2021. With two months remaining, it is well on track to beat its previous record.
