New Toyota GR 86 rumored to be a 3-cylinder hybrid

Rumor has it that the third generation of the Toyota GR 86 will utilize a three-cylinder turbocharged engine along with an electric motor while keeping most other features intact, Carscoops reports.

The current GR 86 generation (shown here) has been around since 2021. Some sources claiming inside knowledge of the company’s affair say its production may permanently end in 2025. To us, this forecast sounds much too pessimistic for an image vehicle like the GR 86. Year 2027 or 2028 sounds like a more accurate estimate.

It's also unclear what kind of powertrain the sports car will end up with. Different theories mention 1.3L, 1.4L and 1.6L variants. The latter seems the likeliest because Toyota is already using a 1.6-liter three-cylinder engine in its latest GR Yaris and GR Corolla.

What seems clear is that the GR 86 will be turbocharged and partially electric. It should arrive with roughly 300 PS (296 hp / 221 kW) heading to the rear wheels and a choice between two transmissions – manual and automatic.
