Volkswagen previews the new T-Roc R ahead of launch

Simultaneously with launching the new T-Roc crossover in Europe, Volkswagen has teased its performance modification called the R. It is expected to debut in a few months rocking the same engine as the Golf R, making it the most powerful T-Roc to date.

The two official images above come from Volkswagen Design Director Andreas Mindt. The remaining shots were allegedly made during the UK premiere of the regular T-Roc. The photographer claims they depict the R version in disguise.

If you look closely, you will see that the SUV is wearing a rather bold body kit under the wrap – quite a bit bolder than the currently available R-Line package. It also appears to ride on larger wheels and have bigger brakes with blue calipers. A look at the rear end reveals an Akrapovic quad exhaust system.

It’s already official that the T-Roc R will pack 333 PS (328 hp / 245 kW), just like the EU-spec Golf R. The company says nothing about torque, but the donor has 420 Nm (310 lb-ft) of it, so we expect something similar here. A seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and all-wheel drive are high up our list of expectations, too.

Like any self-respecting R, the new T-Roc will most likely benefit from a stiffer suspension setup and a sportier interior. It will reside at the top of the lineup and therefore most likely come with most options already installed.

Rumor has it the new VW T-Roc R will break cover in the second half of 2026. Its less ambitious sibling debuted in August (see video). Buyers are choosing from mild and plug-in hybrid powertrains rated from 116 to 170 PS (114–168 hp; 85–125 kW, respectively). The drive is on the front axle with no opportunity for AWD, so the R version should be interesting in that respect, too.
