All-electric Volvo XC90 counterpart to debut under a “more human” name

Volvo will be introducing a new electric crossover SUV next year based on the XC90 chassis, and it wants to give it a more natural-sounding name, instead of an alphanumeric index.

The car will have SPA2 underpinnings and no gas-powered version. It will go into production at the same factory in Ridgeville, SC, as the Polestar 3, which is based on the same principal tech. The smaller-sized electric Volvos will utilize a Chinese platform named SEA instead.

Volvo CEO Håkan Samuelsson pointed out that the management had originally intended to call the model ‘XC90 Recharge’, but later realized that naming an all-new vehicle after an existing ICE model would be improper. As a result, the company decided to give it a name ‘worthy of a newborn child’.

Furthermore, the Swedish carmaker plans to ditch its old naming structure moving forward – quite a revolutionary decision by its standards, because the last such Volvos were the ‘Amazon’ and ‘Duett’ models that left production around half a century ago. Both were also known under their alphanumeric indexes: P122 and P445, respectively.

The Volvo Concept Recharge featured in our gallery and the attached video should give you a decent idea of what to expect from the car marque going forward.
